Egypt, West Sohag: Wind power plant will be built in Egypt following an agreement between the Egyptian government and a Norwegian energy company.

A new 5 GW wind power plant will be constructed in West Sohag, Egypt. It was signed off by the Egyptian New and Renewable Energy Authority. The project involves the allocation of land in West Sohag to construct the wind power plant, with a total of $5 B in investments.

The new wind power plant is expected to produce 5 GW of energy annually for Egypt. The government expects the project to have significant economic benefits.

Egypt aims to reduce its carbon footprint by updating its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC). The updated NDC document shows that Egypt plans to reduce GHG emissions from electricity generation, transmission and distribution by 37 % by 2030.

“Installing additional renewable energy (RE) capacities to increase electricity generation contribution to be 42 % of generation mix by 2030,” the document stated.

“Reaching this target will be achieved through accelerating the scale-up of on-grid renewable energy through reducing electricity produced from fossil fuel power plants. This includes the replacement of inefficient thermal power plants by renewable energy capacities. This scale-up in renewable energy would necessitate to transform the electricity grid to ‘smart grid’ This would be done through modern digital technology, smart metering, and flexible solutions.”

To achieve these goals, Egypt plans to decommission 12 fossil fuel power plants with a total capacity of 5 GW. The country intends replacing them with 10 GW of renewable energy built using private investment.
