UAE, Al Ajban: EWEC to develop the new 1.5GW Al Ajban PV IPP.

Abu Dhabi-based procurer of water and electricity EWEC (Emirates Water and Electricity Company) received four proposals for the development of the new 1.5 GW Al Ajban Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Independent Power Project (IPP) in Abu Dhabi emirate.

The proposals were received from Saudi Arabia’s ACWA Power; France’s EDF Renewables; Japan’s Marubeni Corporation, and a consortium of China’s Jinko Power and Japan’s JERA. Project awarding and the execution of the Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) are expected to take place by the fourth quarter of 2023.

Al Ajban Solar PV is EWEC’s third solar power project in Abu Dhabi, after 1.2 GW Noor Abu Dhabi IPP and the 2 GW Al Dhafra Solar PV IPP.

Once commercially operational, Al Ajban solar PV IPP will generate enough electricity to power approximately 160,000 homes across the UAE and is expected to reduce Abu Dhabi’s CO2 emissions by up to 2.4 M metric tonnes per year.

Othman Al Ali, Chief Executive Officer of EWEC, said: ” Receiving these competitive bids demonstrates our expertise in commissioning world-leading renewable energy projects that attract internationally renowned companies to collaborate on achieving the UAE’s carbon-neutral future.”

The Al Ajban project will raise EWEC’s total solar power capacity to approximately 4 GW. The company aims to raise Abu Dhabi’s solar power generation capacity to 7.3 GW by 2030.
