Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Tabuk: L&T secured a contract worth $1.5 B for a 525 kV HVDC line in Saudi Arabia’s NEOM.

Larsen & Toubro (L&T), India’s leading engineering, procurement, and construction firm, has secured a $1.5 B transmission line contract in Saudi Arabia’s city of the future, NEOM.

NEOM is situated in the North-West region of the Kingdom, and the agreement entails L&T’s Power Transmission & Distribution Business to erect a 525 kV High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transmission line.

The transmission line is a segment of a large-capacity Voltage Source Converter (VSC)-based HVDC system, designed to link NEOM Industrial City with Yanbu, a crucial power production hub in western Saudi Arabia. This connection will furnish NEOM with a steadfast and eco-friendly power source.

The current project will see L&T engineer, procure, and build a 2.2 GWac photovoltaic (PV) solar power plant, a 1.65 GW wind generation Balance of Plant, and a 40 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). Additionally, the contract encompasses the construction of three 380 kV switching stations, 306 km of 380 kV overhead lines, and underground cables required for connecting to the Kingdom’s grid network, along with an Energy Power Monitoring System (EPMS).

This newly awarded 525 kV HVDC transmission line contract is a key component of a broader initiative to forge a novel power grid for NEOM, aligned with the city’s ambitious aspirations for renewable energy and sustainable growth. The contract is slated for completion in 2027.
