Germany, Dortmund: Amprion has awarded GE Vernova’s Grid Solutions business a contract for 12 power transformers as part of grid upgrades to accommodate more renewable generation.

The 400kV transformers will be manufactured at GE Vernova’s grid facility in Mönchengladbach in western Germany. Totalling more than 5000MVA, the transformers will make an important contribution to the supply of electricity to the 29 million people who live and work in the area covered by Amprion’s grid.

Amprion’s extra-high voltage 11,000-km-long network extends from Lower Saxony to the Alps where about a third of Germany’s economic output is generated. Delivery is planned from 2025 to 2027 and the transformers will be installed at 9 substations.

“As utilities transition to renewable energy sources, electrical transmission grid operators continue to face increasing demand and complexity,” said president and chief executive of GE Vernova’s Grid Solutions business Philippe Piron.

He added: “Today’s transmission systems are expected to carry bulk power in ways they never originally were designed to accommodate. We are proud to support Amprion, a long-time valued GE Vernova customer, to reinforce its 400kV electrical grid. Our advanced power transformers will help it increase capacity and maintain stability on its network.”

Replacing a transformer fleet installed in the 1970s with GE Vernova’s advanced transformers provides Amprion with updated grid technology that will help integrate even more renewables onto its network.
