Romania to build transmission line worth EUR 3 B

Romania, Bucharest: The project linking Hungary and Romania is valued at more than EUR 3 billion.
A high-voltage direct current cable across Romania to Hungary is “the number one priority,” Minister of Energy Sebastian Burduja said. It is valued at more than EUR 3 billion.
A power link will be placed next to the BRUA gas pipeline from southeastern Romania and connect the country to neighbouring Hungary, the Minister told Bloomberg. The project must be finished by 2029, he pointed out.
He added that the feasibility study would be completed within six months and that it would determine the capacity.
The idea is to double renewable energy production by 2030 to satisfy Romania’s electricity needs and enable exports. The country currently has 11 GW online and the authorities aim to add 10 GW by the end of the decade. The power line is necessary for the grid to integrate all the planned renewable energy capacity. Romania and Hungary signed a deal for the interconnection cable in December.
The investment boom in the sector, particularly solar power, was highlighted. The sector is benefitting from massive subsidies, most of which come through the European Union.
Burduja revealed that the government is looking for investors and financing for the power cable. National transmission system operator Transelectrica will participate, the minister added. An agreement with Hungary was signed in December. The two governments are also working on an electricity interconnection under the Black Sea with Georgia, Azerbaijan and Bulgaria.
Separately, Romania has a project for an undersea cable that would deliver the electricity from the country’s future offshore wind power plants.
