India, Noida: With an increasing population and a proportional rise in power demand, the Noida Authority plans to build eight new substations of 33/11KV (kilovolt) capacity each by the next year.

In the first phase, three such substations will come up in the 7x sectors (74 to 78) of the city and adjacent areas, benefitting nearly 120,000 people. Officials said land for the substations has been earmarked in Sectors 76, 78 and 121. The land for other substations has not been decided on yet.

“Given the problem of power overload, the UPPCL’s Noida wing, PVVNL, raised a demand for eight new substations of 33/11 kV capacity each for the city. These substations will be set up in and around the 7x sectors. We selected the land for the first three substations in Sectors 76, 78 and 121,” Rajesh Singh, a deputy general manager in Noida’s electrical and mechanical department, said. He added the substations will be ready by 2024.

The new power ramp-up by way of new transformers and substations aims to decentralise and distribute the existing load on the overloaded substations. “This will help provide uninterrupted supply in the future during peak summer months,” Rajeev Mohan, PVVNL chief engineer, said.

In the last three years, the peak summer demand in the city has increased from 1,600MW to nearly 2,000 MW. In winter, it drops to 900-1,200MW.

According to power officials, there is no supply gap in GB Nagar, but there are frequent and long-duration outages due to poor infrastructure – leading to local faults – and lack of adequate repair and maintenance. Noida has over 80 substations, most of them with lower capacity, as per the earlier plans of the city.
