EDF Renewables has opened the Rivière des Galets solar power plant in Réunion, providing a second lease of life to a former “wild” landfill site.

France, Réunion: EDF Renewables has opened the Rivière des Galets solar power plant in Réunion, providing a second lease of life to a former “wild” landfill site.
This 4.6 MWp capacity solar plant, situated in the “ZAC ECOPARC Le Port” economic and industrial activity zone, will supply renewable energy equivalent to the annual consumption of 4,500 individuals, or 14% of the commune of Le Port’s population, aiding the island’s energy transition.
This project, awarded through a 2020 Energy Regulatory Commission (CRE) tender, was possible due to the support of the Municipality of Le Port and the Urban Community of the West Coast Territory (TCO). EDF Renewables also committed to site cleanup, removing nearly 2 tonnes of batteries and 1,100 tonnes of waste, which were appropriately processed.
Local firms secured approximately €2 million in construction contracts, fostering regional expertise. Additionally, a Reunion-based company will handle plant maintenance over the 20-year operational span. EDF Renewables, in collaboration with environmental associations and expert offices, carried out targeted efforts to enhance site biodiversity. The project involved extensive work to transform the initially invasive, waste-covered area into a habitat that promotes heritage flora and avifauna, including the planting of indigenous palms and shrubs to create a more suitable habitat for various bird species.

Olivier Hoarau, Mayor of the Port, added, “I am happy to see this solar power plant now operational. Le Port being one of the sunniest towns on the island, the Rivière des Galets site is the ideal location for this type of installation.”
