South Africa, Kouga: A state-of-the art upgrade of Kouga Municipality’s substation in Saffrey Street, Humansdorp, will improve the overall efficiency of power distribution to residents.

A state-of-the art upgrade of Kouga Municipality’s substation in Saffrey Street, Humansdorp, will not only improve the overall efficiency of power distribution to residents, but will also ensure better control over the electricity grid.

The project, which spanned three years and incurred a cost exceeding 4,7 million rands ($256,000), involved the installation of advanced 11 kV smart technology switchgear. Additionally, the substation now features new SF6 circuit breakers, voltage transformers, and associated protection equipment along with feeder panels – all of which contribute to heightened safety for both the substation and technicians working there.

According to Kouga executive mayor, Hattingh Bornman, this upgrade is a pivotal step towards improving grid reliability, reducing operational expenses, and optimising overall efficiency of power distribution.

“Beyond these benefits, it also introduces modern advances, such as digital communication and data analytics, including Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) for centralised monitoring and control of the substation. This allows technicians to make informed, real-time decisions based on data from a variety of sensors. Furthermore, this project lays the groundwork for future innovations in the energy sector, including the integration of renewable energy sources and the implementation of demand response programmes,” Bornman said.
