Pakistan, Islamabad: The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has sanctioned a $250 million loan to boost the power transmission network in Pakistan’s Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces.

The move is part of the broader Power Transmission Strengthening Project, which seeks to bolster the country’s national grid stability by boosting its transmission capacity. This project includes the expansion of high-voltage transmission lines and a concerted effort to mitigate losses in Lahore’s existing infrastructure.

ADB’s relationship with Pakistan dates back to its founding. Over the years, the bank has committed over $52 billion in various forms of financing, including public and private sector loans and grants. This funding has played a critical role in driving inclusive economic growth in Pakistan while enhancing infrastructure, energy and food security, transport networks, and social services.

The scope of the project extends beyond mere infrastructure development. ADB is also implementing social initiatives such as promoting gender equality within the energy sector. This includes the establishment of childcare facilities and providing technical training and livelihood skills development, particularly for women. These efforts highlight ADB’s dedication to holistic development and not just infrastructure expansion.

In addition to the Power Transmission Strengthening Project, ADB is also providing technical assistance in preparing for the Sindh Coastal Resilience Sector Project. This reflects ADB’s broader strategy which emphasizes energy security, climate resilience, and efficient energy management in the country.
