India, Ghaziabad: The capacities of three substations in Ghaziabad, Loni, Sahibabad, and Morti, will be increased by installing additional transformers.

This will be done to address the issue of overloading and improve power supply distribution. While each of the substations has the potential of 220 kV capacity, currently they are operating at 132 kV capacity with two to four transformers ranging from 60 to 63 MVA.

This week, the process begins at Morti substation, where a third 60 MVA transformer will be installed. By early next year, Loni and Sahibabad substations will each receive an additional 63 MVA transformer. The estimated cost for each transformer is around Rs 6 crore ($720,000).

Speaking on how this additional 60 MVA transformer is going to benefit areas that have been facing erratic power supply like Raj Nagar Extension, Meerut Road industrial area, in and around Mohan Nagar, Rajender Nagar, Vaishali and Pratapgarh, Harishchandra Verma, executive engineer of the Uttar Pradesh Power Transmission Corporation Limited (UPPTCL), said: “Currently, the 220 kV Morti substation is operational with two transformers of 60 MVA capacity each. The additional 60 MVA transformer will increase the substation’s capacity from 120 MVA to 180 MVA.”

Tenders for upgrading the Loni and Sahibabad substations have also been issued by UPPTCL, with work set to start by February next year. Currently, the 220 kV substation at Loni operates with two 63 MVA transformers. The new 63 MVA transformer will increase its capacity from 126 MVA to 189 MVA. In Sahibabad, the additional fourth transformer with a capacity of 63 MVA will increase the 220 kV Sahibabad substation’s capacity from 189 MVA to 252 MVA. “The transformers should be operational by April 2024,” added Verma.
