South Africa, Johannesburg: Suburbs across the east of Johannesburg have been without electricity since Saturday morning after a substation caught fire.

The fire at the Observatory substation began at 3 am on Saturday morning, and City Power has been working around the clock to restore power. Residents were told that the utility is working on a seven day turnaround to return power.

The affected suburbs are Bellevue, Bruma, Cyrildene, De Wetshof, Bezuidenhout Valley, Kensington Observatory, Malvern and Troyville. Ward 66 councillor Carlos Da Rocha said this is the biggest outage he’s seen. “It has affected four wards.”

As the outage continues, residents have been trying to find dry ice to fill their refrigerators or trying to source or hire generators. Meanwhile, City Power reported that the cause of the fire is not yet known.
