India, Chennai: In the wake of Cyclone Michaung, Tangedco has decided to move its substations and transmission towers to higher ground.
Floodwaters had prevented the state-owned discom from restoring power to several areas for days. Its 230 kV substation at KITS Park, serving software firms and the neighbourhood of Sholinganallur, was energized on Sunday evening, six days after the cyclone hit. In fact, even two days after the cyclone, the substation was under five feet of water, with the control room also being inundated. Also, workers had to wade through floodwaters to reach the Perumbakkam 110 kV substation and to repair the 230 kV transmission lines in Manali.
The discom now plans to move substations out of low-lying areas, to relocate transmission towers from bodies of water, to better maintain ring main units, and to set up a switch gear for automatic secondary supply.
A senior official said, “We will recommend shifting of substations in low-lying areas such as Perumbakkam. Similarly, transmission towers inside water bodies such as Kosasthalayar and Buckingham Canal and lakes will be shifted to the bunds. We will procure high-intensity thermal driers to prevent tripping, and they can be placed on raised platforms.”
