Chile: PowerChina has finished building a 480 MW PV plant in the Atacama Desert in northern Chile, an area recognized for having the world’s highest solar radiation levels.

The subsidiary of PowerChina, PowerChina Chile, has announced the completion of a 480 MW solar plant in Maria Elena, situated in the Antofagasta region of Chile. This facility is equipped with a pioneering robotic panel cleaning technology which enables an 80% reduction in water consumption. The solar plant is integrated into Chile’s electrical infrastructure, linked to the National Electric System via a 9.6 km transmission line connecting to the Miraje Substation.

The construction of the plant began in June 2022 and was led by the Generadora Metropolitana joint venture. The venture includes Chile’s power company AME and France’s EDF. $980 million was secured for financing the project at the end of 2021, with a substantial portion allocated for the plant’s construction.

Before the completion of this facility, the largest solar plant in Chile was the 398 MW Guanchoi facility, developed by Enel Green Power Chile. This facility began commercial operations in July 2023.
