South Africa, Bophelong: Residents of Bophelong were left with joy on Thursday, January 18, as Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi delivered 19 transformers to their community.

Packing Fountain of Life Global Church, residents came out see the handover and the switch on during the Siya Transformer, transformer replacement programme. Lesufi was flanked by Emfuleni Local Municipality Mayor, Sipho Rade, and different MMCs including Nkosinathi Ndwandwe, Tumi Mochawe, Regina Makgala Lesoane, and City Power officials.

The mayor addressed the community, alluding to growing crime due to the community being plunged into darkness.

“Take care of the little electricity you get. You know your challenges and we are here to help you deal with them. The crime rate is increasing because of electricity and today we are bringing you light. That light will restore the hope that was lost,” he said.

Lesufi said he was happy to deliver transformers and put smiles on the people of Bophelong.

“I asked City Power to purchase transformers and deliver them to us [provincial government] so we can bring light to the people and today we are delivering some of those transformers. Today alone, I am bringing 19 transformers so our people should have electricity. We want to apologize to the community that some of you spent Christmas in the dark and your children went to school on their first day without electricity, but those days are gone now, electricity will be restored,” he said.
