Libya, Tripoli: The General Electricity Company of Libya (GECOL) has announced the near completion of the new Wadi al-Shati 66 kV substation located in the southern region near Sebha.

The substation is notable because it will be the first substation in the country to operate on a single bay. According to a statement issued on Tuesday, GECOL, a state-owned company, revealed that the pioneering substation is a “model project and the first of its kind in Libya”. The company also added that the facility will help reinforce and stabilize electricity transmission across towns and cities in the southern area of the country.

According to a statement from last November, once operational, the substation will supply power to several towns in the Wadi al-Shati, which are Alzowaia, Tamezzawa, Fuggum, and Al-Sreerah. Prior infrastructure in Libya has relied on traditional multi-bay high voltage substations.
