SSEN Distribution to develop Outer Hebrides electricity network
Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) Distribution has submitted its plans to the energy regulator Ofgem for the future electricity network in the Outer Hebrides.

UK, Scotland: SSEN Distribution is currently in a price control period, known as RIIO-ED2, until 2028, to apply for additional funding to develop the islands’ electricity networks.
The application has assessed likely demand on the network in the region and considered the need for ongoing robust network resilience, the condition of existing submarine cables, and the need to move away from diesel generation as a back-up means of supplying electricity. The submission outlines SSEN’s preferred whole system solutions for the archipelago, and the methodology used to assess each proposal. The company has requested the energy experts at Regen to collect and assess information around future electricity demand.
SSEN will continue to develop proposals and engage with stakeholders during 2024 and provide a second regulatory submission in January 2025. The company is also looking at options to further develop the networks in the Inner Hebrides and in Orkney before a submission to the regulator in 2025.
