The first five out of planned 62 wind turbines at Avangrid and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP)’s 806 MW Vineyard Wind project have begun to spin.

USA, Massachusetts: The 13 MW GE Haliade-X turbines are now providing about 68 MW to the New England grid. The project delivered first power, around 5 MW, in early January, and each of the five turbines have already delivered power intermittently. At the moment, the project has 9 installed turbines and is in the process of installing the 10th. Preparations are underway to transport the 11th turbine to the site. More power will be delivered to the grid sequentially, as each turbine will start producing electricity after the commissioning process is finished. The project is connected to the grid in Barnstable, and power is transmitted by underground cables that connect to a substation on Cape Cod.

“This marks a turning point in the clean energy transition. After many decades of advocacy, research, policymaking, and finally construction, America’s offshore wind industry has gone from a dream to reality,” said Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey. “Across Massachusetts, in 30,000 homes and businesses, when you turn on the light, you will now be using clean, affordable energy. This will make the air we breathe safer and healthier, save customers money, and bring us one step closer to achieving net-zero emissions.”
