Laos, Vientiane: The Lao government has signed an agreement with Savan Vayu Renewable Energy Co., Ltd. (SVARE) on developing a 1200 MW wind power project in Sepon district, the central province of Savannakhet on the border with Vietnam. The project, the largest of its kind in Laos, is a milestone in the country’s journey toward clean energy and sustainable development.

With an investment of about $2 billion, the wind farm, expected to be operational by early 2026, will help meet domestic energy needs and strengthen the country’s position as a reliable power exporter in the region, contributing to regional energy security and cooperation and helping it reach its renewable energy targets by 2030.

Laos has also signed many renewable projects with development partners in recent years and hopes to become an energy supplier in Southeast Asia through electricity exports to neighbouring countries and enhancing the development of clean energy sources. According to the Lao Ministry of Energy and Mines, the country has 94 power plants with a total installed capacity of more than 11600 MW, including 81 hydropower plants. Currently, about 80% of the electricity is sold to neighbouring countries including Thailand, China, Myanmar, Vietnam, Cambodia and Singapore.
