USA, New York: The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) has approved the large generator interconnection agreement between Equinor’s Empire Wind 1 project, New York ISO and Consolidated Edison Company of New York. This marks the first FERC approval for any offshore wind project to connect directly into the NYC transmission system and allows the project to connect through the Sunset Park onshore substation at South Brooklyn Marine Terminal into the New York City electrical grid at Con Edison’s Gowanus substation. The project will deliver 810 MW of renewable energy.

Empire Wind 1 was selected as a provisional winner in New York’s fourth offshore wind solicitation and received approval for its federal construction and operations plan from the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management. In December 2023, the New York Public Service Commission issued the project’s Article VII Certificate of Environmental Compatibility and Public Need. The wind farm will help transform the South Brooklyn marine terminal into an offshore wind industry assembly facility and an operations and maintenance base.
