Romanian DSO’s substation upgrade

Romania, Bucharest: Romanian power distribution system operator (DSO) Rețele Electrice Muntenia, part of Greek utility Public Power Corporation (PPC), has completed a 70 million lei ($15.2 million/€14 million) project to modernise the Nord substation (Stația Nord), the largest distribution substation in the country. The project involved the consolidation of the building and the replacement of power equipment without interrupting supply. The station is located in central Bucharest and serves over 73000 clients such as central institutions, hospitals, and ministries. The company covered the cost of the project internally.
The modernisation works will bring increased safety in supplying existing customers, enhanced flexibility of the high and medium voltage network, and the ability to accommodate growing consumption demands and customer numbers. The 1969 building went through a complete consolidation and over 11000 tonnes of masonry and reinforced concrete elements were demolished. The installation of equipment has freed up 60% of the available space, and there are plans for a technological testing and development centre for the company. The remaining space will be used for the expansion of necessary distribution facilities.
The substation has six 40 MVA power transformers, with an installed power of 240 MVA and a guaranteed power of 160 MVA. The peak load recorded so far has been about 127 MVA.
