SP Energy Networks completes upgrade

UK, Scotland: SP Energy Networks has completed a £9.5 million upgrade of overhead powerlines in Ayrshire to help enable growth and support the transition to net zero in the area. The project connecting Chipperlaigan and Ayr substations started in 2021 and involved comprehensive rewiring and steel works on 29 towers spanning more than five miles. It is a steppingstone in the right direction for East and South Ayrshire as the areas progress towards the Scottish Government target of becoming net zero by 2045.
The refurbished route has undergone a significant transformation as part of SP Energy Networks commitment to modernise and enhance its network. The 275 kV double circuit overhead line was constructed in 1966 and has served as a vital link in the regional power grid. Network modernisation will help support the growing demand for green energy solutions such as electric vehicles and heat pumps.
