Romania, Bucharest: The National Power Grid Company Transelectrica has completed an investment of approximately RON 92 million ($20 million) to strengthen energy security in the Dobrogea region, develop the transmission grid and the energy system, by building two new 400 kV double circuit connections, with a total length of 55 km, in the 400 kV Medgidia South Electrical Substation, making it the third important energy node for power evacuation in Dobrogea.

This made it possible to commission four 400 kV overhead lines: 400 kV Medgidia South – Varna (Bulgaria), 400 kV Medgidia South – Dobrudja (Bulgaria), 400 kV Medgidia South – Stupina and 400 kV Medgidia South – Rahman, transforming Medgidia South into an interconnection with the Bulgarian system.

The project has a significant impact for the Dobrogea area and an importance for the Cernavoda Nuclear Power Plant. As a result, the distribution of power flows on the lines in the Dobrogea area and on the connections with the rest of the system, including Bulgaria, the Republic of Moldova and Serbia, will become more efficient.

A benefit of the project is the reduction of active power losses on 400 kV lines by around 10 MW, under conditions of high electricity generation in wind power plants. Cross-border capacity on the Bulgarian border will be increased by 200 MW to 300 MW for export and 100 MW for import. The developments will contribute to strengthening the transitional stability of the area and the Cernavoda Nuclear Power Plant, and to reducing the restrictions on energy production in the area.
