India, Gujarat: Adani Green Energy Limited is developing a 30 GW renewable energy power plant on barren land at Khavda in Kutch of Gujarat. With an area of 538 km2, the project would become the planet’s largest power plant regardless of the energy source. The area is five times the size of Paris and almost as large as Mumbai. The project was started in December 2022 and first production was made on December 31, 2023. The company will invest about Rs 1.5 lakh crore ($18 billion) and Adani group will invest about Rs 2.3 lakh crore ($27.6 billion) in renewable energy and manufacturing capacity by 2030.

The project is a hybrid solar-wind one, and currently has operationalised capacity of 2 GW of solar power. According to Vneet Jaain, MD, Adani Green Energy Limited and Director, Adani New Industries Limited, the company wants to produce 4 GW more in the ongoing financial year, making it 6 GW by March 2025. Later, the plan is to expand by a minimum of 5 GW every year.

As of now, there are 30 turbines installed, and foundations for 50 more have been laid. 4 million solar panels have also been installed. Thanks to the project, the country could avoid around 58 million tonnes of CO2 emissions annually.
