USA, Chicago: ComEd has announced the expansion of its 345 kV Elmhurst transmission substation, an infrastructure investment that will prepare the region for future power needs and increase resiliency of the system. Construction is underway, with the project expected to be finished by December 2025. The expansion will support continued dependability for existing customers and allow for future upgrades to be made to foster growth for the region.

ComEd is taking action to modernize the grid to support increasing. Following the upgrades, the company will be able to increase high-voltage transmission capacity in the region as demand continues to grow.

The project is worth $93 million, and engineering and design started in 2023. Construction of this substation is being completed by a local firm, Ruiz Construction Systems. Customers served by the substation should not experience interruptions in power delivery.

The upgrades are expected to support increased connectivity to neighbouring substations in the northern part of the state, increasing the overall resiliency of the system. By increasing the number of connective pathways from substation to substation, the company is strengthening the HV system to perform better during severe weather.
