UK, Scotland: Norwegian offshore wind company Vargronn AS and Scotland’s Flotation Energy have been granted offshore planning approval for the up to 560 MW Green Volt floating wind project, which will be located in Scottish waters. This means that all needed planning consents for the project to move forward are now in place.

The project will have up to 35 floating turbines and be located 80 km from Peterhead. It will generate electricity to supply oil and gas platforms in the North Sea and feed excess power to the grid. The two companies were granted site exclusivity in March 2023, and the wind farm should become operational by 2029. It is said to be Europe’s first commercial-scale floating wind project and will allow the full retirement of existing offshore power generators and enable an 80% reduction of the carbon emissions of the oil and gas platform’s power demand.
