Germany, Rügen: The first of 50 Vestas turbines has been installed at the 476 MW Baltic Eagle offshore wind farm in the German Baltic Sea, marking the start of the project’s final phase of construction. The project is located north of the German island of Rügen and is expected to be fully operational by the end of 2024. Iberdrola is the majority-owner, while UAE-based renewables developer Masdar holds a 49% stake. The remaining 49 Vestas V174-9.5 MW machines will be shipped to the offshore construction site in the next months, and will be installed with Fred Olsen Windcarrier’s Blue Tern jack-up vessel.

Once completed, the project will generate enough electricity to supply around 475000 homes annually. Around 3000 GWh of its output is contracted by energy to telecommunications company O2 Telefonica for 15 years. The wind farm is one of three offshore projects that make up Iberdrola’s Baltic Hub, together with the 350 MW Wikinger, in operation, and the 300 MW Windanker, currently entering the execution phase.
