India, Uttar Pradesh, Greater Noida: Chief minister Yogi Adityanath laid the foundation of a 220 kV substation at Jewar via video conference on 6 June.

Last year in December, Jewar MLA Dhirendra Singh had raised the demand for the $10.2 M (Rs 77 crore) substation as the area had to source power through a long line from Aligarh and Bulandshahr leading to frequent line trips and voltage fluctuations.

The substation, which is funded by the UP government, will be built on a land given by Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA). The work will be completed in 1.5 years.

Once ready, the substation will address the power demand of Jewar, Dankaur, Rabupura and some urban areas of Greater Noida apart from a part-requirement for the upcoming airport at Jewar.

“With this, the UP government is the first government in the country that has taken a major step in the direction of power reform after the lockdown,” said Dhirendra Singh, MLA, Jewar. He also said Jewar and neighbouring areas such as Rabupura and Dankaur, which suffer frequent power cuts, will benefit greatly from this.

“Efforts will also be made to enhance the substation’s capacity so that electricity can be supplied for the upcoming airport,” he added.

Puneet Gupta, superintending engineer Noida power department, said, “The substation will cater to the demands of Jewar area and sectors 32, 33, 34, etc. of YEIDA. It will feed the upcoming Jewar airport as well.”
