- Introduction
A transformer is a device that transfers electrical energy from one circuit to another through inductively coupled conductors. A transformer is termed as either a step-up or step-down transformer depending upon whether the secondary voltage is higher or lower than the primary voltage, respectively.
The main benefits of VG-100® are shown in Figure 3 and described below.
- Biodegradability
One of the key benefits offered by transformers filled with natural esters is the prevention of pollution using natural ester liquid instead of mineral oil. Natural ester is naturally synthesized, come from renewable resources, and is also biodegradable and nontoxic, limiting pollution risk during operation, installation, and end of life.
- Reduced aging
Older transformers can explode when their insulating materials begin to fail. This happens as cellulose and oil absorb water over time and degrade cellulose’s ability to insulate, triggering an explosion.
Ester oils as our VG-100® have a self-extinguishing property and have a fire point above 300°C.
Studies carried out by Prolec GE have demonstrated that ester fluids have higher capacity to absorb more water than mineral oil under similar conditions, keeping cellulose dry which helps to extend the paper and transformer life.
- Higher loadability
From figure 6 shows users would benefit from 3 different ways by using natural esters:
- Smaller transformers for the same rating
- Same size units for larger ratings
- Transformers with greater overload-ability and longevity
Fire Safety
- High fire point (>300°C), reduces fire risk
- Self-extinguishing, fire ceases when heat source is removed
- Reduces costs for indoors fire protection
- No need for sprinklers or vault
- Only 3ft clearance to walls
