Description

The Test Lab Section Manager will perform testing of power transformers as a finished product as well as in-process testing (as needed). These tests include polarity, resistance, insulation, load loss, temperature rise, impulse, and voltage tests. This position shall lead the final testing of units and gain acceptance of the test results with the customer. This position will also consist of supervision of technicians.

Summary: 

THE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO THE FOLLOWING:

  • Plans and administers environmental, operational, or performance tests on Hyosung HICO products and systems.
  • Supervise test lab inspectors with emphasis on positive employee relations in accordance with Company policies and procedures.
  • Oversees activities related to test lab inspectors including staffing, scheduling, coordinating, and planning.
  • Designs and directs engineering and technical personnel in fabrication of testing and test-control apparatus and equipment.
  • Coordinates and directs engineering activities concerned with the development, procurement installation, and calibration of instruments, equipment, and control devices required to test.
  • Determines conditions under which tests are to be conducted and sequences and phases of test operations.
  • Review customer test specification and implement appropriate product testing to meet the customers’ requirements utilizing applicable quality assurance and manufacturing department procedures.
  • Ensure appropriate application of electrical power tests such as the following: ratio tests, polarity and phase relation, resistance, insulation resistance, insulation power-factor, losses and excitation, impedance voltage, temperature rise, lightning impulse, switching impulse, applied voltage, induced voltage, discharge, noise, equipment loss, and tap changer testing.
  • Analyze and interpret blueprints, drawings, manuals or other information required to determine specifications, inspections procedures, testing requirements and certification methods.
  • Confers with engineering, and technical personnel to resolve testing problems, such as product or systems malfunctions, incomplete test data, and data interpretations considering such factors as conditions under which test was conducted and instrumentation, procedures, and phase of test used to obtain and record data.
  • Provide leadership for customer testing; maintain positive customer relations and support.
  • Perform and/or coordinate repairs on components, assemblies, and testing equipment for compliance to specifications.
  • Evaluate testing equipment and make recommendations for the purchase, installation, and maintenance.
  • Perform calibration and TPM tasks as needed to maintain production testing and compliance.
  • Provide leadership, direction, support and training for test lab inspectors.
  • Maintain and complete testing and production schedules as requested by the customers.
  • Lead the Test Lab Department with an emphasis on positive performance in meeting customer commitments while initiating steps to correct performance issues. Perform scheduled employee performance evaluations and develop personnel skills via training and support.
  • Provides informal and formal performance feedback with test department employees to assess employee performance and help employees improve their performance.
  • Administers corrective action; resolve employee complaints through impartial investigation, counseling, or corrective action as needed.
  • Practice 6S and adhere to all safety rules, guidelines and safe working practices.
  • Safely operate test equipment, material handling and lifting equipment such as overhead cranes, forklifts, pallet jacks, motorized scissors lifts and work platforms as required to maintain a safe work environment.
  • Promote a culture of process control and quality excellence by providing effective leadership for problem solving, failure investigations, and implementing appropriate countermeasures.
  • Support and assist the Quality Manager as needed.
  • Further the goals and positive, professional image of the Test Department by effective dealings with customers and other internal departments.
  • Know HICO’s Quality, Safety and Environmental Policies. Be able to fully discuss the importance of these policies and their impact in the workplace.

Requirements: 

THE NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO THE FOLLOWING:

  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Perform test equipment and tool inspections and calibration as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned in support of ongoing business activities which include but are not limited to: the ISO-9001 program, daily and routine manufacturing and QC inspection issues, and lean manufacturing initiatives, internal audits, customer visits or field assessments, testing issues or general QA/QC procedural matters.
  • Assist with on-the-job training in the areas of testing.

EDUCATION/SPECIAL SKILLS/EXPERIENCE/TRAINING:

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or related technological field, plus 2 – 5 years’ relevant experience in transformer testing in heavy industries or utilities, or equivalent education and experience.
  • Broad knowledge of applicable Quality Assurance and Manufacturing Department procedures.
  • Broad knowledge of electrical power tests such as the following: ration tests, polarity and phase relation, resistance, insulation resistance, insulation power-factor, losses and excitation, impedance voltage, temperature rise, lightning impulse, switching impulse, applied voltage, induced voltage, discharge, noise, equipment loss, and tap changer testing.
  • Developed math and electrical engineering skills.
  • Developed verbal and written communications skills.
  • Broad knowledge of and experience in using inspection tools, instruments and equipment.
  • Developed computer skills for entering and retrieving data.
  • 1 year of experience in supervisory role

PHYSICAL/MENTAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE POSITION AND ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS OF THE WORKPLACE:

  • Ability to use office equipment and tools, such as: PC, photocopier, fax machine, test equipment, quality instruments, digital camera, etc.
  • Able to travel domestic and international to conduct troubleshooting of testing problems as necessary.
  • Ability to communicate with others to complete work assignments.
  • Ability to analyze data and develop accompanying reports.
