TM: Engineer Hasan Abdawani, we are very pleased to have the opportunity to interview you and learn a bit more about you, about VOLTAMP, the market, and the portfolio of transformers that you manufacture.

HA: I extend you a warm welcome.

TM: Can you tell us a little bit about your background?

HA: I took charge as Chief Executive Officer of Voltamp in May 2014. As regards my professional background, I hold a Master`s Degree in Electrical Power Engineering from University of Manchester and Bachelor of Electrical & Electronic Engineering from University of Wales. I’m a member of the Institute of Electrical Engineers, and have served for more than 25 years at the Senior Executive management level in the electricity sector in the Sultanate focusing mainly on restructuring and unbundling of the electricity sector. Prior to joining Voltamp, I had an eight-year stint with Electricity Holding Company as Deputy Chief Executive Officer. During this period I served as board member of various electricity & power companies such as MEDC, Majan, Mazoon, Dhofar Power Co., Ghubra Power & Desalination Co. and the GCC Interconnection Authority Board (GCC – Gulf Cooperation Council). I also serve as a member of various tender committees.

About the company

TM: Please tell us a few words about VOLTAMP. What is your annual sales turnover and how many people does the transformer business employ?

HA: Voltamp Group is one of the major engineering, design and manufacturing companies in Oman, and the MENA (Middle East and North Africa). Voltamp manufactures an extensive range of power and distribution transformers, low voltage switchgears and packaged sub-stations using state-of-the-art technology at our manufacturing facilities in Sohar and Rusayl. With a capacity of 10,000 MVA, Voltamp has one of the largest manufacturing facilities in the MENA region. Innovation is in our DNA and we plan to introduce new products, and endeavor to expand our presence in the export markets. We have achieved more than 35,000 installations all over the MENA region, which amply points to Voltamp’s strong credentials in the regional market. Also, we export 30 per cent of our products to GCC Countries.

In a way, through all this, the Voltamp Group exemplifies Oman’s manufacturing prowess. In this context it must also be mentioned that Voltamp has bagged several prominent industry awards for the best manufacturer in the electrical products category in the last few years. We have participated in various major international trade shows attracting attention of the electricity and oil & gas sector. Voltamp’s success is mainly due to its core philosophy of unflinching focus on building world-class products that meet specific customer requirements.

Finally, we emphasize greatly on best management practices. All the three group companies under Voltamp – Voltamp Energy SAOG, Voltamp Transformers Oman LLC and Voltamp Power LLC – are IMS (Integrated Management System) certified by the Geneva-based globally acclaimed certification company SGS after a two-stage audit process, for seamless integration of Quality Management Systems (ISO 9001:2008), Environment Management Systems (ISO 14001:2004), and Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems (OHAS 18001:2007) into their respective Integrated Management System module.

Going further, towards achieving highest productivity, Voltamp has improved the manufacturing practices which has resulted in increasing the capacity by over 40 %. We have technical collaborations with leading international technology leaders, including Tatung Taiwan, SIEMENS Germany, GE and Schneider, France.
