Central Power Research Institute (CPRI) is an autonomous organization under the Ministry of Power, Government of India. Established in 1960, the headquarters of the Institute is at Bangalore and its units are located in Bhopal, Hyderabad, Nagpur, Noida, Kolkata and Guwahati. The activities of CPRI cover:

a) Furthering applied research in electrical power engineering
b) Independent national third party laboratory for testing & certification of power equipment
c) Render consultancy and field testing services to power utilities and industry
d) Conduct customised training programmes for upgrading technical manpower skills for utilities and industry

Being one of the largest research and test houses in the world, CPRI has built up expertise to cater to the entire gamut of services required by the power sector covering generation, transmission and distribution under one roof. CPRI houses unique facilities for evaluation of EHV/UHV equipment going into the 800/1200 kV system, high power short circuit testing of power equipment, transmission line tower & accessories testing, seismic qualification, facilities like Real Time Digital Simulator (RTDS) for conducting power systems studies, evaluation of liquid dielectrics, cables and capacitors, materials characterization, insulation properties, communication protocol for power system automation, energy meter evaluation, testing of refrigerators, air conditioners and domestic electrical appliances, including LED and SPV lighting systems. Besides, the Institute has expertise and infrastructure for undertaking In-situ condition monitoring and diagnostics of substation equipment and energy audit.

Short circuit test facility

CPRI has established transformer test facilities at High Power Laboratory Bangalore, STDS Bhopal, and Short Circuit Laboratory Bangalore to cater to the needs of the transformer industry as per IS: 2026 standards and IEC: 60076 standards. The short circuit testing is conducted as per IS: 2026-5 (2011) or IEC: 60076-5(2006) standard.
