Megger has always been about transformers

Megger often reminds us of the ‘Megger Test’ – a DC insulation test for transformers and other high voltage equipment. It has been around since 1889, practically from the beginning of transformer manufacturing. While this is a great fact, what is it that Megger has to offer today, and what do you see for the future of transformer testing?

Megger, a global group of companies with headquarters in Dover, UK, is the market leader in the world of test and measurement of electrical networks. Having been involved in the transformer business for so many years, the transformer market is of particular importance to Megger. Let me share some figures with you. Megger has about 1,350 employees and revenue of 250 million euros in 2015, which is a fourfold growth in the last 15 years.

Over the years, Megger has acquired many companies with high technical expertise in transformers, which has enabled us to continue our contribution to the transformer industry by means of developing new test methods, pioneering new measurement techniques, improving measurement accuracy and reducing testing time.

There is much more to Megger than just the ‘Megger Test’

Some of the most important recent acquisitions related to transformer testing include the acquisition of the Swedish company PAX in 2008, and the German company SEBA in 2012. They perfectly complement Megger’s core team, which has already paved the way for innovations in transformer testing by pioneering the dynamic resistance measurement technique for load tap-changer diagnostics and portable frequency domain spectroscopy in 1995, individual temperature correction of dissipation/power factor in 2008, automatic detection of tan delta/power factor voltage dependence, dedicated transformer test vans, and more.

Dynamic resistance measurement is the best method to measure and verify switching times in load tap-changers and Megger’s patent pending technology also makes it possible to measure the loading resistors at the same time.

TRAX is a transformer and substation test system packed with features that facilitates the transformer test engineer’s tasks and reduces testing time while results will be more reliable and accurate.
