Siemens Transformers: A global launch of the resilience concept

Blackouts are the nightmare of today’s energy industry, no matter in which part of the world utilities operate: in a lot of regions and countries there is a history of famous blackouts – in both Asia and Europe, just as in North and South America.

The reasons for such blackouts are manifold: old or faulty equipment, operational failures or outages as a result of natural disasters or human attacks. These are all borderless phenomena that can happen all over the world at any time. Although famous blackouts are later often handled as if they had been big adventures, for most people they are more than just inconvenient and may pose a threat to people‘s security if they last longer than a few hours. Beside this, the costs for the concerned companies could threaten their existence as well. This is why grid resilience concepts to enhance the stability of power systems are increasingly becoming a priority for power generation and transmission companies. The grid infrastructure differs from country to country, and so do the appropriate measures.

As a global transformer manufacturer and a partner of the leading power companies in the world, Siemens Transformers has developed a comprehensive and modular strategy for grid resilience. The concept consists of three pillars containing different modules. This way, companies can identify their path within this plan and chose whatever best fits their needs.

1. PREVENT

Preventive measures comprise of all kinds of services for the existing transformer fleet. A widespread condition monitoring helps keep track of the status of all installed units. To be able to give precise recommendations on what needs to be done, a number of defined measurements is taken and the data analyzed by specialized tools. A simple traffic-light-graphic helps the operator to easily stay on track with the evolution of its fleet and easily identify which unit is likely to fail or simply needs servicing. Retrofit or repair can help to enhance the lifetime of these transformers by lowering operational risks. To rule out further worries, Siemens offers long-term service agreements including a 24/7-hotline.
