How artificial intelligence can improve the control and maintenance of power transformers

Why is artificial intelligence becoming increasingly important for energy network operators?

Why is artificial intelligence becoming increasingly important for energy network operators? One important reason is that new technologies can help compensate for the loss of personnel knowledge and the increased demands on operating equipment. According to the 2020 U.S. “State of the electric utility survey report”, 77 % of energy grid operators have difficulty finding qualified personnel, with the result that operating equipment cannot be adequately inspected and maintained as it had been in the past. In addition, the energy transition is posing enormous challenges for the power supply: Infrastructure conceived many decades ago suddenly must transport electricity in a different way. Furthermore, power grids are often ageing, and with maintenance strategies that have been the norm up to now, there is an increasing need for renewal, which entails further expense. One solution to meet these challenges lies in intelligent, data-driven utilization concepts that make it possible to use existing infrastructure more efficiently and extend its lifetime.

Artificial intelligence is concerned with the automation of intelligent behaviour as well as machine learning. Due to ever-increasing computing power, algorithms can now be used for control as well as condition assessment, which offer decided advantages to users. How these solutions can look in practice is demonstrated by the following applications used by the open system solution ETOS® from Maschinenfabrik Reinhausen (MR).
