The rapid increase in global power demand due to industrial development and seasonal load growth has led to power systems becoming larger and more complex in their configurations. Consequently, the need for power flow control has emerged. Increased losses due to load imbalances in parallel circuits, constraints on power transmission, and system protection during the connection of new power sources are the typical challenges that need to be solved through the control of power flow.
By shifting the phase angle, a PST enables the control of power flow. PSTs are mainly used for power distribution in parallel circuits or control of power flow between two systems. With the recent increase in renewable energy sources, the need for and application of PSTs to control power flow is increasing as well.
