Some say that transformer insulation design is more art than science. One hundred years of data are considered for the electrical strength of power transformer insulation and its dependence on time. Where possible, scatter values of breakdown voltage and partial discharge inception voltage have been extracted from the reference list in order to optimize insulation design and possibly enable future statistical coordination of internal insulation of transformers.

In this column by Vitaly Gurin, find out about the exciting story on the development, significance, and challenges related to power transformer insulation, focusing on its history, technological advancements, and the importance of understanding and optimizing the volt-time curve in the context of transformer insulation coordination.
