USA, California: A power transformer fire at a Southern California Edison substation in Irvine caused a massive outage yesterday. The cause of the incident is under investigation.
A transformer fire was reported at 5 a.m. and the crews responded at a substation at 15882 Sand Canyon Ave., according to Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Steve Concialdi.
They arrived to find heavy flames and a thick, black plume of smoke, reports Orange County Register. Concialdi added that mineral oil was burning in one of the transformers and threatening to spread to nearby equipment. The fire was brought under control and contained to the single transformer.
Last night, Southern California Edison reported that 8,063 customers were without power without indicating when service would be restored for those customers.
