Kenya, Nairobi: Energy Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir announced the government was actively brining down the power cost of doing business in Kenya in order to effectively compete with other African countries in attracting investors.

As part of the efforts, the upgrades have been carried out in Westlands, Parklands and Loresho on Saturday and Sunday to ensure reliable power connection, reports Capital FM.

The upgrades involved the refurbishment of 61 transformers, 215 poles as well as Parklands transformer substation undergoing major repair works. Kenya Power had spent KES 900 million ($ 10 million) so far of the KES 1 billion ($ 11.4 million) set aside for power supply improvements.

“We must be competitive when we compare ourselves with South Africa, Egypt, Mauritius and have Kenya be the destination of choice for global manufacturers.” Kenya Power Managing Director Ben Chumohe said.

The Kenyan government is looking into doubling the country’s power generation capacity to 5,000 MW by 2016.

Chirchir and Chumo carried out an inspection of the ongoing works in Parklands, Westlands and Loresho.
