India: The acquisition of Vijai Electricals T&D business by Toshiba may enable India to establish itself as the core transmission and distribution technology supplier in the world.

Despite India’s installed power generation capacity (December 2013) being 233.9 GW, nearly one fourth of the total power generated fails to reach the end consumer due to the lack of efficient transmission and distribution system as well as many distribution transformers burning out, reports The Economic Times.

Japanese Toshiba has developed its technology of efficient transmission and distribution systems for over 100 years and since the acquisition of the T&D business from Vijai Electricals, the company has formed Toshiba Transmission & Distribution Systems (India) Pvt. Ltd. (TTDI) with the aim to transfer the technical know-how to India.

Toshiba stated it believes that its distribution transformers will play an important role in ensuring stable power supply, aiming to garner more than 20% market share of distribution transformers in rural India and that it is in a position to help India overcome power supply shortages and fluctuations in the years to come.
