India, Bangalore: Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (Bescom) has begun shifting over 25,000 transformers following the High Court order.

The Karnataka High Court directed Bescom to clear footpaths of the transformers in three months so, at the moment, the Bescom is shifting some of its bulky transmission-distribution transformers, reports Bangalore Mirror.

Power minister D K Shivakumar told Bangalore Mirror that “there are several restrictions to set up transformers.” He said:  “We just cannot install them in parks, bus stops, etc. Further, nobody will spare their private land for transformers. However, we are conducting a survey to identify transformers that have been located on pavements and in a phased manner we will relocate all of them.” Bulky transformers are currently being replaced with compact ones which occupy significantly less place and can also withstand heavier load.

Last year, Bescom had called for designs from the public offering a reward for the successful designs but due to hardly any response, the engineers have come up with their own design.
