Ethiopia, Addis Ababa: The Ethiopian Electric Services has installed 248 new transformers in Addis Ababa and the regional states in an attempt to solve the problem of frequent power cuts.

The existing transformers cannot cope with the increasing power load, reports Zegabi. According to Alemyehu Tegenu, Minister of Water, Irrigation and Energy, there is no shortage of  power in the country, but power cuts are caused by the distribution network and power transformers being overloaded.

Alemayehu said: “The existing power generation capacity is adequate to accommodate the existing demand. However, the aging distribution system is unable to handle the ever increasing power demand.”

As transformers in Addis Ababa explode frequently, the residents doubt the quality of the transformers, but Alemyaheu said that transformers are tested before they are installed. He added that there is a high power demand that the transformers are unable to accommodate.

A Chinese power company, China Hydro, hired by the Ethiopian Electric Services has installed 170 of the 248 supportive transformers which has, according to Alemyaheu, already improved the situation.

In Ethiopia, power demand is increasing at a rate of 32% every year. According to the minister, the current demand for power is more than 2000 MW.
