USA, Nevada: A new power transformer is being installed by NV Energy at a substation about 35 miles north of Elko. The substation is essential to providing reliable power supply to mining and agricultural customers in the region as well as the residents of Elko.
NV Energy is replacing the old transformer at Humboldt substation which failed with a new, larger capacity transformer that had been kept as a spare at the company’s Reno storage yard. Transformers at the Humboldt substation control the flow of two 120 kV electric transmission lines, reports Elko Daily.
The new transformer which weighs about 200,000 pounds (90 tonnes) and is 20 feet wide (6.1 m), had to be hauled from Reno to Elko by two semi-trucks — one pulling the load, and another pushing it from Reno to Elko.
“Moving the transformer took quite a bit of planning.” said Will Johnson, supervisor of substation operations for NV Energy. “We needed to get permits from the Nevada Department of Transportation and the Nevada Highway Patrol had to escort the rig.”
The transformer arrived at the Humboldt substation after a two-day journey and Johnson said the installation is expected to be completed by the end of August. He added it was fortunate the spare transformer was available because it takes about one to two years to have one built.
