Duke Energy Indiana plans to modernise its aging electric grid with the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission (IURC) within a seven-year, $1.9 billion plan using a combination of advanced technology and infrastructure upgrades to improve service to its customers.

The plan’s benefits include replacing ageing electric grid infrastructure, including substations, power transformers, utility poles and power lines, as well as energy savings from grid technology that optimises voltage and reduces overall power consumption by about 1%.

“With advanced systems, we can pinpoint problems faster and get the lights on sooner while providing customers with better information.” said Duke Energy Indiana President Doug Esamann.

A decision by the IURC is expected by spring 2015, reports Fierce Smart Grid.
