ABB will supply 54 ultra-efficient 10 kV dry-type transformers for an R&D and data storage centre in Tianjin, China, owned by Tencent, one of China’s largest internet service providers.

Eco-efficient dry-type transformers will help minimise losses and enhance power reliability. The new Tencent center in Tianjin is expected to support the company’s growth in northern China.

“Secure, efficient and reliable power supplies are critical for such data centers and transformers have a key role to play in ensuring this” said Markus Heimbach, head of ABB’s global transformer business, a part of the company’s Power Products division. “We are constantly enhancing our transformer technologies to provide our customers with best-in-class products for a range of applications.”

These efficient dry-type 10kV transformers are ideal for data centers as they require high levels of power reliability as digital devices are extremely intolerant to power supply interruptions or fluctuations which can result in data losses with serious consequences. Efficiency is also a key element and these transformers are capable of reducing no-load losses by up to 10 percent, compared with similar standard transformers and are more environmentally friendly.

The epoxy resin cast transformers will be manufactured in ABB’s Shanghai facility.
