India, Pune: Over the past 15 months, as many as 705 transformers have been stolen in the district, costing the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd (MSEDCL) nearly INR 10 crore ($1.6 million).

An official from the company said that thieves usually steal copper wires, plates and oil from transformers, which renders them useless, reports The Times of India.

“Once a transformer is stolen, power supply to the area is affected and there is no alternative but to install another one. We have even tried welding the transformers to two poles, but nothing seems to deter the thieves.” he said.

He added that the company administration might refuse to provide a replacement in future if the theft is repeated in some locations.
