Uganda, Kampala: Yesterday, a huge fire gutted a power transformer causing extensive damage and leaving massive losses at Kampala North substation.

The fire is the second within 11 months and has left the newly installed transformer destroyed beyond repair, reports New Vision.

The managing director of UETCL Eriasi Kiyemba said only a new power transformer of equal voltage can restore normal operations at the substation. “The extent of the damage on this transformer is far reaching and I don’t think we can repair it. We just have to replace it and this will take time.” said Kiyemba.

Kiyemba added that further damage was avoided by sensor gadgets that detected the fire and switched off the other transformers.
