Switzerland, Zurich: An underground transformer station installed by ABB in Caishikou in downtown Beijing started operating.

The 220 kV Caishikou smart substation project started in 2013 and now, a museum is under construction on the ground above the substation, reports Penn Energy. ABB has supplied several key power products for the project, including sensor enabled transformers, gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) and iUnigear, a smart switchgear solution.

The smart transformer also incorporates ABB’s TEC ST (Transformer Electronic Control as an Intelligent Electronic Device) together with other smart components, and features real time monitoring, overload capability forecast, and ageing calculation. The transformer deploys water as a cooling medium on the ground making it a more environmental friendly and safer solution.

In 2012, ABB delivered its innovative high-voltage disconnecting circuit breaker (DCB) to SGCC’s 220 kV smart substation in Chongqing, which was the first of its new generation smart substations.
