Canada, Newfoundland: Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro was looking to install a new transformer at the Sunnyside terminal station to replace the one which blew in January at the cost of $8.4 million, however the new unit is not working properly.

“The (new) transformer was required to go through factory acceptance tests. So there’s a large number of tests that we undertake on the transformers before we accept them.” said Rob Henderson, vice-president of Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro.

“The transformer went through those tests and failed it. The manufacturer then had to go back and examine the transformer to determine the problem and then repeat the tests. And the transformer failed the tests a second time.”

The manufacturer, ABB, is continuing to investigate and troubleshoot at a facility in Virginia, reports The Telegram. Henderson said Hydro will not arrange delivery or provide payment for the transformer unit until it clears factory testing.

Hydro has made arrangements to try to assure it can provide power as required if the seasonal cold strikes early. It is moving in an older transformer, already in its possession which will come from Holyrood and is entirely redundant at its current location.
