Denny substation worth $174 million to be built in South Lake Union
USA, Washington: The $174 million power substation will be built in South Lake Union, Seattle. According to its proposed design, it will have sloped walls, metal cladding and glass panels that emit a soft glow at night.
USA, Washington: The $174 million power substation will be built in South Lake Union, Seattle. According to its proposed design, it will have sloped walls, metal cladding and glass panels that emit a soft glow at night.
The design shows an “elevated interpretative pedestrian walkway” following the Denny Way around the edge and continuing north on the east side of the building. Sloped walls inwards should reduce the size of the building at street level.
Utilities would be hidden away from public view inside the substation. Three 6 to 6.7 m tall transformers would also not be visible from the interior yard where they will be installed. No overhead wires would come in or out of the substation.
The project includes additional $62.2 million for transmission lines and $60 million for a system to distribute power to South Lake Union. Construction of the Denny substation is scheduled for early 2016 and it should be complete by the end of 2017.
Power Engineers is the project manager and in charge of electrical design, reports Daily Journal of Commerce. NBBJ is the architect and KPFF is the structural and civil engineer.
