Australia, Perth: Regulators have issued new safety measures after last week’s power transformer explosion at the busy Morley Galleria shopping mall in Perth which killed two people and left two with severe burns.
Australia, Perth: Regulators have issued new safety measures after last week’s power transformer explosion at the busy Morley Galleria shopping mall in Perth which killed two people and left two with severe burns.
EnergySafety, the authority responsibe for technical and safety regulation of the electrical and gas industry in Western Australia, said that the short circuit in the equipment which led to the explosion would not have occurred if the switch on the transformer had been turned off prior to work commencing, reports ABC News.
Under the new regulation, the switches designed to allow maintenance work while they are still running to avoid having to shut them, will from now on have to be turned off.
“What it means is that any maintenance has to be done with the circuits dead. You just might have to do it at an inconvenient time or you may have to get in supplementary generation and provide power from another source for a while, but it can be done,” said EnergySafety director Ken Bowron.
